Over the years, Moscow has tried on different titles and changed statuses: it has been the capital of a principality, the Third Rome, the capital of the empire, and has become a hero city, a city of five seas, and a superstar city. Every year bold and ambitious urban development projects designed to strengthen the position of Moscow as the largest global metropolis in the XXI century. One such project is the development of the coastal areas of the Moscow River, perhaps the most important urban element, without which it is impossible to imagine the capital.
We did not mention five seas by accident. After the construction of two canals - named after Moscow and the Volga-Don - from the capital by water you can reach five seas: the White, Baltic, Black, Azov and Caspian Seas. In the industrial era the relevance of building ports in the city was obvious, but with the advent of post-industrial times the presence of major cargo ports - Western, Northern and Southern - near the city center suggests the need to create a new image of Moscow embankments. The architects of the APEX Project Bureau were lucky enough to work on the development of the Southern river port and to design a modern office and business district with residential areas and a landscaped embankment.

Site plan
The length of the South Port wharf is about 2.5 kilometers. After the ZIL project, it is the second longest river front, which needs decent architecture, a new silhouette and new economic meanings. The former port and "Eurocement" factory territory of 37.5 hectares stretches along an artificially built "bay" and has rather modest dimensions in depth.

The shape of the land plot gave the architects the idea for the development of the area: broken in four places along the quay wall, it divides the space into five different parts. It seemed appropriate for each part to apply a different morphotype of housing, which would emphasize the individual image of each of the five sections.
Site 1
The first site, bordering the newly built Kozhukhovsky Bridge, is divided into equal rectangular parts and built up with perimeter blocks. On the border near the bridge there is a dominant office and business complex with exhibition pavilions of unusual silhouette and provocative architecture.
The second section is a mix of block and tower transparent development, which highlights the line of the embankment. Both plots contain all functions of a full-fledged residential district: on their territory there are two kindergartens and a school.
Site 2
On plot 3, architects applied so beloved by developers the tower morphotype. All windows of apartments are oriented towards water, providing maximum number of lots with excellent views, and on the border of plots 3 and 4 near the planned metro station "South Port" there is a multifunctional shopping and business center.
Site 4 is a reference to the development of the Havsko-Shabolovsky massif. Houses are shaped in the form of "eiders", arranged relatively to the water on the diagonal, their angular facades dissect and direct the flow of people towards the inner courtyard space of the quarter. The rhythm of their ledges creates the impression that the buildings' bodies, as it were, turn around their axes with either their lateral sides or angular facades towards the viewer.
The last, fifth section, located near the Pechatniki metro station, built in medium-rise quarters, forming the front of the embankment. The vivid geometry of the facades and shifts in volumes of buildings create an individual image of the residential neighborhood, noticable from a distance.
