One of the most complicated construction projects of Moscow, the implementation of which has been delayed for a long time – Paveletskaya Square – will have been transformed into a multifunctional shopping complex that has no analogues in Russian construction by 2022. Developed by Apex Project bureau and based on the concept of 5+design studio and SWA/Balsley's landscape design, the project is destined to breathe fresh life into the depressing train station area that has been abandoned for decades. The development spot that has the form of an irregular trapezium, will become a new «oasis» within the Garden ring with lanterns-framed entrances leading to the underground part, small architectural forms and a park on the rooftop.

The site is located at the intersection of not only the most important traffic flows, but also several multi-scale buildings of different historical eras. Paveletskaya Square is to become a continuation of significant public spaces connecting Taganskaya,Serpukhovskaya and Kaluzhskaya Square, as well as Gorky Park.
The main public spaces will be located underground, thus avoiding conflict with the surrounding buildings and cluttering the territory. From the side of the road and the train station the area will look like a landscaped park zone. Thanks to the intensive landscaping that takes up more than 75% of the site area, the complex will become a new point of attraction in the industrial zone of Paveletskaya Square for the citizens and guests of Moscow.
The architectural appearance of the complex is based on the composition of glass roofs made in the form of spatial domes with translucent filling, which allow natural lighting to penetrate inside the complex to the commercial spaces and recreation areas. They are complemented by upward curved massive visors that accentuate the entrances to the mall for easier orientation of the guests.
The main entrance to the shopping complex is located in the south-eastern part of the site. The cascade of open stairs and ramps, protected by a canopy, leads visitors get to the 2nd floor – to the spacious main atrium. Double-light shopping mall-galleries with natural upper lighting coming through the translucent roof lead deeper inside the complex. The second entrance to the shopping mall is also protected by a canopy - it is located closer to Dubininskaya Street on the -1 floor and is formed around a small atrium with an exploited roof. There is a separate recessed vestibule designed in the north-eastern side of the shopping complex for direct access to the large trade areas from the Garden Ring.
The unique engineering and structural solutions of the object allowed to reveal the potential of the territory, located in the vicinity of the metro station, and turn it into a place that is truly needed for this part of the city. The specialists of Apex managed to propose a new bold solution for the underground space, having achieved a minimal impact on the surrounding buildings both during construction and after the completion of the project. The use of evolutionary algorithms and artificial intelligence with multicriteria optimization allowed for preservation of the aesthetics and lightness of the constructions.
The engineering solutions of the project retain the idea of a spacious underground area supporting the comfortable green urban area above. Including the integral parts of the complex - ventilation shafts, as well as the engineering communications – proved to be a complicated task, since all the installations had to be unnoticeable and consistent with the looks of the square. Thanks to joint creative work of our engineers and architects, we succeeded in making them hardly recognizable and as inconspicuous as possible while providing the necessary level of comfort for visitors at all the levels of the new complex.
The functionality of the complex is also extensive: alongside the significant share of retail space, the guests will be able to choose from a wide range of cafes, food courts and restaurants. A large underground parking for guests, arriving by car is envisioned for the project.
